Back in May the always great Big Thief released their third studio album U.F.O.F. For most bands, the story would essentially end there. But in keeping with their hard-working attitude, the band have just announced another brand new album, headed our way in just two months.
The new album is titled Two Hands, and is slated for release on October 11 via 4AD. It’s being billed as the “earth twin” with U.F.O.F. being the “celestial twin.” Basically, the more out there atmospherics of the previous LP have been traded out in favor of something more raw and human. To further illustrate that shift, the band recorded the album almost entirely live. Which is something fans should be excited about considering the magnetic energy the group have displayed on tour.
Speaking about this batch of new songs, lead singer/guitarist Adrianne Lenker says:
”Two Hands has the songs that I’m the most proud of; I can imagine myself singing them when I’m old. Musically and lyrically, you can’t break it down much further than this. It’s already bare-bones.”
To get a good sense of this style, Big Thief have also dropped the album’s lead single with live favorite “Not.” The new song evokes both the band’s spirit of their debut and their newer sense of complete unity. As we already heard on the amazing group of songs on U.F.O.F., Big Thief have found themselves at a place of being able to completely lock in as a unit and let their sounds unfurl. “Not” takes this a step further by allowing generous room for a full-out, guitar shredding climax.
