Matt Berninger (The National) and Phoebe Bridgers have just gifted us a collaboration that, to the surprise of no one, is absolutely lovely. The song is called “Walking On A String” and its origins come from a pretty unlikely place. See, last month the Zach Galifianakis and Scott Aukerman film Between Two Ferns: The Movie debuted on Netflix. Nestled towards the third act of the film, a surprise cameo appeared with none other than Berninger and Bridgers (as well as Walter Martin and Matt Barrick of The Walkmen) performing “Walking On A String.”
It was a surprise that I’m fairly sure no one was expecting. But almost immediately, the internet was asking: hey, where can we get this song? Turns out we just had to wait a few weeks. Today, Berninger and Bridgers (who should team up for a full album based on the strength of both this song and their name combination) dropped an official video for “Walking On A String” as well as a digital single that features two versions of the track. The video was shot by Berninger’s brother Tom as well as Chris Sgroi. In it, we get some suitably intimate visuals of the pair recording their parts for the song in studio (among some other guests).
Watch the video, and stream both versions of “Walking On A String” below.
As of this writing, the two have not hinted at any further collaborations together. But we certainly hope it happens. They’re the dream team we didn’t realize we were missing.
