If a concert could feel like a color, Bahari in Brooklyn this past Friday would be calming electric pink.
There were women of all ages everywhere I looked. An excited pack of girlfriends out for a night after work, older women with their husbands or boyfriends, and a teenage girl by herself wearing a cropped tank top despite the intense New York chill outside. Halfway through the show, I became distracted by a moving neon light in the crowd that I later came to find was a woman twirling a light-up baton to “Fucked Up.” No matter what performer they came to see, I could consistently overhear groups uttering, “They are, like, so good.” And they really were.
This was Bahari’s first show with Elohim on their Group Therapy tour, but it wasn’t evident based on the exhibition of their performance. In lieu of some minor technical difficulties, both girls exuded coolness in leather pants and white Doc Martens.
A crowd favorite was an unreleased track that’s chorus discusses “waking up the neighbors.” Clearly a party anthem, the heavy baseline had everyone in the audience pairing up and dancing as if it were a Friday night high school party. However, if you were to ask the older gentleman at the back of the venue, he would tell you that “gameboy” had the best danceability as he began jumping and shimmying at the opening lyrics.
While Bahari’s music leans towards an electronic dance-pop sound, there were tender moments throughout the show as well that illustrated both women’s abilities to be simultaneously vulnerable and fun, shifting between the two feelings effortlessly. Their musicality was equally paired to their presentation on stage, and it was easy to sit back and observe the two girls take the Elsewhere stage by storm.
If you were lucky enough to be a member of the audience, you would have witnessed the effeminate power and unapologetically cool elements that Bahari brings to a performance.
