Last month blues rock throwback duo The Black Keys announced a big batch of tour dates along with a brand new single “Lo/Hi.” It was somewhat of a surprise from the guys as it had been five years since any new music. It appeared as if a new album was indeed on the way, but no such news came out. Until today. For now The Black Keys have officially announced a new album, and it’s called…drum roll….Let’s Rock. Hmm.
The new album title may not come as a surprise to you if you remember the name of their upcoming tour, which was simply called the “Let’s Rock Tour.” At the time, the tour name just seemed like an on-the-nose literal joke of a title. But it was in fact hinting directly at the name of their ninth studio album. Is it, though, a reference to Twin Peaks? After all there is a song on the album called “Fire Walk With Me.” This can’t be a coincidence, right?
At this time we do not know. But we do know that the sound of Let’s Rock appears to be a throwback to the band’s earlier records. Drummer Patrick Carney says:
“When we’re together we are the Black Keys, that’s where that real magic is, and always has been since we were 16. The record is like a homage to electric guitar. We took a simple approach and trimmed all the fat like we used to.”
We’ve already got a good sense of what that means with “Lo/Hi,” and now it becomes even clearer with the second single “Eagle Birds.” Both do In fact hint towards a more straightforward, bare, and rocking LP.
Check out “Eagle Birds” down below. Scroll just past that and you’ll find the album art and tracklist for Let’s Rock.
