Interview: Dylan Dunn talks new single “Such a Freak” and upcoming EP

Today, rising talent Dylan Dunn releases “Such a Freak”, the lead single off his upcoming debut EP Blue Like You. The new single from the Memphis-based singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer bends genres, interweaving emotionally-charged vocals with almost haunting instrumentals and harmonies. The track’s accompanying music video elaborates on this haunting nature. Nightmarish, Alice in Wonderland-esque scenes come to life, bringing the “freakish” nature of the lyrics to the foreground.

Check it out:

We caught up with Dunn to talk about the new track and what fans can expect from Blue Like You.

What is your earliest memory of music/When did you know that you wanted to create music?

When I was four I’d mess around on my mom’s guitar for fun, I’ve been obsessed with music for as long as I can remember.

What impact would you say being rooted in Memphis has on your music?

I’ve always had respect for blues and soul and sometimes I end up letting some of that into my writing. And no I don’t like barbecue.

What was the writing and recording process like for “Such A Freak”?

It felt like a weight off my shoulders, that song had been sitting with me for so long, and watching it come alive was invigorating.

How did the music video for “Such A Freak” come to light?

I’d listen to the song and see visuals alongside them, these Alice in Wonderland like scenes and nightmarish bedrooms kept coming to the forefront.

Who is your biggest musical inspiration and why?

I’ve always admired Queen, Brian May’s playing resonates with me and inspires me to write more abstractly.

How would you describe the overall vibe and feel of your EP Blue Like You?

What is the story behind your favorite song you have made and the inspiration behind creating it?

My favorite track “Lemonade Eyes” came together so fast It almost felt like I didn’t write it, I had been through a pretty rough time recently and didn’t feel about thinking about it, so instead I wrote about the emotions I was feeling.

What can listeners expect to hear from you in the future?

I’m just getting started I have so much more I want to share.
