Kelly Lee Owens drops “On” and you have to listen to it

Angelic artist Kelly Lee Owens has released the third song, “On, that will be featured on her forthcoming sophomore album, Inner Song. Having already put out “Night” and “Melt!,” Owens is ready to drop her new album on August 28, a few month delay in when she was originally scheduled to release it, due to the pandemic.

Owens’ music typically and beautifully meshes delicate dream pop with the bumping sounds of techno, and “On” is no exception.

“On” starts off so sonically creamy with her incorporation of soft ethereal vocals mixed with a rather tranquilizing electronic beat. As the track evolves over its almost six-minute life span, the melodious and relatively mellow electronic sound takes a shift to a more harsh techno-like rhythm. The shift represents a change from an initial revelation and subsequent acceptance of hard-to-swallow truths, “So / This is how it must go / And now I am moving on,” toward the actualization of those consequential freeing feelings, where that actualization requires fluid and ongoing movement.

As Owens said herself about the song, “This is perhaps the most intimate and personal song I’ve written so far – the two halves of the track reflect upon sad acceptances of the truth and then the joyous aftermath of liberation that can come from that.”

Some may say that techno or even generally house is just noise or is simply lifeless, but Owens just keeps showing us that that claim is anything but accurate.
