And all of the sudden, it’s here. After first teasing it a few weeks back, Chance The Rapper has finally dropped his new album The Big Day. It’s technically his first official debut album, meaning it’s actually being sold, unlike his previous three mixtapes. The news of a new album was official, sort of, a little while back when Chance opened up a new webstore with pre-orders for it. Though at that time it did not have a title or release date other than fall 2019. But things got realer last week when Chance dropped by The Tonight Show and officially announced it was due for release July 26. Which, as you should know, is today.
However, instead of rolling out the album at midnight last night, Chance hung onto it until midday today. Why? No idea. The point is, it’s now here. The Big Day is his big follow up work to his massively successful 2016 mixtape Coloring Book. And although that was a mixtape technically, it still was available on all streaming platforms, and thus eligible for the Grammys. He went on to win three of the awards in 2017, including Best Rap Album. So, it’s fair to say that the hype, and stakes, are pretty high for The Big Day. Does it measure up? Is it better? You be the judge. Set aside some time this weekend to dive into it. At the very least, it should be a pretty great accompaniment to these gruelingly hot summer days.
