For the last few months The Mountain Goats have been teasing the release of their upcoming album In League With Dragons, which drops this Friday via Merge. On the road to its release, they’ve carefully pieced out three singles from the project, all of which deliver on the goodness we so expect from the group. If those (rightfully) built up your anticipation to huge heights, today is your lucky day for the band have teamed with NPR for an early stream of the entire album.
Like the past few albums from The Mountain Goats, In League With Dragons follows an overarching theme that it tries to stick to. This time out, the band have delivered what they’re dubbing “dragon noir,” named so because of the themes of Dungeons & Dragons-like settings/stories as well as the overall dark nature of the tracks. All told, it’s not as rigid a concept as their previous album Goths was, but there’s definitely a through-line to be found within these 12 tracks. And it’s a thrilling one to dive into.
NPR has done us all a great service here yet again by giving us the album stream a bit in advance. They often highlight some anticipated, or simply great works through their First Listen tag. And In League With Dragons is precisely that. For longtime fans of The Mountain Goats, it’s an event all on its own. For newcomers, it’s a treasure of a work that’ll deftly lure you in even with its strange loose concept. All in all, it is already poised to be a highlight of the year.
