CHVRCHES released their third record Love Is Dead back in May, which saw mostly lukewarm reviews. The trio opted to go in a much more mainstream pop-oriented direction in terms of sound and production. For that reason, I feel many people just decided not to give it a listen. But let this be a lesson to make up your mind because the album is still well worth checking out. Despite its leaning into a grander scale, mainstream sound, the band still have a number of great ideas in them. And Lauren Mayberry sounds especially amazing throughout the entire record. But all of this is totally besides the point of this article because what you’re hear to read is about how they covered a Kendrick Lamar song.
Yes, CHVRCHES, the Scottish synthpop trio went into the Triple J studios to record a live take of Kendrick Lamar’s hit single “LOVE” off of last year’s DAMN. It’s actually a really solid choice of song for the group to cover as it is easily one of Lamar’s poppiest offerings. And they totally nail the cover, making it a slightly poppier yet more mellow version of the track. Lauren Mayberry and other CHVRCHES member Martin Doherty (who performs lead vocals a couple of CHVRCHES tracks) trade off verses, combining to a really solid performance. Give it a watch right below here.
